ALCOHOL FREE VANILLA EXTRACT

Updated: Feb 7

Why Alcohol Free?

For certain non-cooking applications such as whipped cream,

or no- bake treats, this is a wonderful option for those who are avoiding any form of alcohol.

For those wanting an alcohol free vanilla extract, here’s a two ingredient version, and two different ways to make it. Both are simple!

Two jars of alcohol-free homemade vanilla extract with labeled tags on a wooden counter. Background has baskets and plates. Cozy setting.

Hand in gray sleeve slicing vanilla bean on wooden board. Glass jars and metal lids with "FOR JARS" logo in background.

Place 5 split, and cut grade B vanilla beans into a pint size mason jar.

Fill with 10 ounces food grade

vegetable glycerin in each jar. I use this brand of glycerin.

Glycerin is being poured into glass jars with vanilla bean sticks inside on a wooden surface. A dark pot is in the background, creating a kitchen setting.

Place lids and bands on jars, and at this point you have two options.

Two glass jars on a wooden surface, one open with vanilla beans in liquid. Silver lid reads "FORJARS." Natural, calm setting.

SLOW METHOD:

Wait six months, shaking the jars everyday and store in a dark pantry.

Since we are using vegetable glycerin, instead of alcohol it can take up to six months to fully infuse.

THE QUICK OPTION:

A hand places a jar in a pressure cooker. The jar lid reads "For Jars." The cooker is metallic and shiny, creating a reflective effect.

Speed up the process and place jars in an instant pot or similar pressure cooker, with 1 cup water, on a trivet.

Process on high pressure for 35 minutes, natural release.

Finger pressing a button on an Instant Pot. Digital display shows "35" minutes, high pressure selected. Buttons labeled for cooking modes.

When jars are cool enough to handle, SHAKE the jars vigorously for one minute after removing from the pressure cooker.

Hand tilting golden liquid from a clear jar into a glass. Background shows a kitchen setting with a black pot. The mood is calm.

A hand reaches into a dark shelf to take a jar labeled "Alcohol-Free Homemade Vanilla Extract." The setting is homey and dimly lit.

Store in a cool dark cupboard for two months to allow total infusion. Shake jars daily for the first several weeks.

Glycerin is thick like syrup, and also has its own sweetness. You can use approximately half the amount for recipes calling for the vanilla extract that is made with alcohol.

These make beautiful gifts, especially for those who are needing a non-alcohol version!

What a great tip! I've made my own vanilla extract with bourbon, but this will be a game changer for whipped cream! 💕

Love your new website!! You have shared so many good ideas! I never thought about making my own Vanilla Extraxt before. I didn’t event think about there being alcohol in it. I will be trying this! Plus it is so expensive to buy the little bottle.

Hey lovely Wendy,

Thanks so much for this alcohol free recipe, so great to have both options!!! I’ve only ever bought vanilla extract, but with how easy both your recipes are it’s inspired me to give both a go & while I’m at it, I may as well make some gifts too (such as sweet suggestion/tip! Thank you!)

Is there an expiry date for either of the vanilla extract recipes of how long they both would last?

With love,…

Thank you for the kind words! As far as shelf life, glycerin does not oxidise, so it has a very long shelf life if stored properly. You want to make sure it's sealed (no outside bacteria can get to it) and in a dark cupboard when not using.
